About

What are we?

Links, analysis and speculation about all things youth, techy and awesome.  Pocket Money scours the web for the things that make us go, “Wow”, and then we write about it.

We’re also all about the UK. Firstly because we live here, and secondly because it doesn’t seem to get enough love for the creative, amazing projects that are happening all the time.  No offense, USA.

If you know something you think we should feature… tell us!

Who are we?

Pocket Money is run by Dan and Trev – hello!  We’re both in our mid 20s and work at BBC Switch, the BBC’s cross-platform brand for 12-16s.  Needless to say, all views expressed in this blog are our own and not those of the BBC, but we think it’s always helpful to know where people are coming from.  Which leads us nicely on to:

Dan’s background: Geek. Used to work with Trev @ BBC Switch. Particularly obsessed with web applications and social media. Ran a conference last summer for young geeks called Young Rewired State. Currently attempting to dedicate some free time to the amazing Apps for Good scheme.

Why ‘Pocket Money’ ?

1) We wanted a name that felt British and young.

2) It sounded better than ’YOUTH AND TECHNOLOGY BLOG’, which doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

3) You can put us in your pocket, next to your money (assuming you have a pocket-sized internet-enabled device and you keep that device in the same place as your wallet, obviously).

4) Dan thought of the name after chatting to some 15 year olds on a train, one of whom had saved up for over a year to get an xbox (£3 a week).  It seemed to sum up the challenges of a lot of young people in our techy age.
